Netball - a game for the boys or the girls?

Netball, a non-contact sport created initially for girls, has seen significant growth over the past 2 years in UMSA. UMSA boys have started to "invade" the game, replacing girls. It's "expected" that the involvement of boys in the netball will increase exponentially over the years. Haha, it's just my theory, might not be true.

As a boy, i have to admit playing the girls' game is not a very fancy thing to do. Real boys will cackle if they know you play netball. I still remember asking jun bin to play netball. His response was netball is for girl la. Instead of taking it as a blow (to my ego), i laughed it off coz i really enjoy playing it. Haha

One thing i do realised is that when boys play netball with girls, they have a slight advantage over the girls. Boys are generally more athletic compared to girls. Height does play a big part as well especially in intercepting high balls. Despite my "tall-enough"height, i faced lots of problems when i was up against zaf. Hehe. She is taller than me....sigh. Where is my 1.80m, i am only 1.78... : (

The other thing is when you have basketballers playing netball. Even if they are new to netball, they can fit in instantly. They only have to know that they cant bounce nor dribble and take more than 1 step. When it comes to shooting, they are almost like God already, super sharp shooters man.

Despite all the advantages that the guys have over girls in the netball, netball still proves to be a very competitive and fair game. The girls can beat the guys too. It happened before in UMSA. That doesnt mean that the UMSA boys are not good, it's because the UMSA girls are very good. I have seen drastic improvements in all the girls. Pei Lyn can be considered as a boy now - fast reaction and good defence, just that she cannot shoot....lolz. Vanessa is the other, she has more agility now and she moves more often, and is a Ms Reliable with all her shots - 90% accuracy...respect.

Some of u might question why do i like to play netball so much. Hehe. My first answer is the girls. Lolz. Netball session is a definitely a way to get to know the girls better. Haha. Well, not for courting, but to know them better as friends. I got to know the seniors - Yin, Wei En and Zaf better through netball, with lots of conversation during and off the games. That applies to the others as well like Shermayne, Swan, and many more.

Second answer, netball is a strategy game. The game requires lots of teamwork and running. Also, it requires you to have man to man defence. These skills are pretty essential for every team sport - basketball, soccer, touch and etc. It's certainly a stepping stones for people who want to take on those higher level sports by starting with netball first. Having said that, netball is not one of the lower level sports, it's a high level one too just not that high ...hehehe...non contact sports ma = more safe....kekeke

Wa, i just realised i can get so crappy. Hehe. Anyway, i wish to see more boys playing netball the next time. The perception of it being girls' game is way too behind time. More and more boys have started to play the game, so what are you waiting for?? It's a good way to mix around and play socially...hehe.

p/s: thanks for all the organisers - Yin, Swan, Pei Lyn, keep it going!!

Here are some pictures for the last netball session for year 2007. More to come next year!!
In this pic alone, there are 6 boys and 3 girls - wa, girls only 1/2 ar? hehe

VanBoon so happy - got to play netball

That's really accurate - ball going into the hoop - and I, can only see

Typical Pei Lyn - pushed people then denied by saying "he fell by himself "
